Day care services

Oncology and haemato-oncology

Gazzard Day Unit offers booked appointment to patients receiving outpatient Systemic Anti-Cancer Treatments (SACT) and some supportive therapies or interventions. Nursing staff are trained to administer SACT and manage central venous access devices (CVADs). The unit can also admit patients to hospital, if required.

Gazzard Day Unit provides treatment for the following SACT specialities:

  • HIV oncology
  • Lung cancer
  • Urological cancer
  • Skin Cancer
  • Haematological cancer

HIV day care 

Gazzard Day Unit provide care for HIV positive patients at various stages of their condition. HIV patients who requiring certain investigations, procedures, post discharge reviews and planned hospital admission can be referred by their clinician.

Rapid Review Clinic

If you have an urgent problem related, or possibly related, to your HIV please call 07805 813 558 where you will be assessed by a senior nurse or doctor. We aim to get you seen more quickly by an appropriate member of our clinical team if deemed necessary. If your problem is unrelated to your HIV we can advise on the best way to have the issue assessed. Our aim is to provide a more efficient and effective, patient-centred service.The service is located on the 2nd Floor, Lift Bank B, Gazzard Day Unit.

  • The telephone triage service will be open from Mon/Tue/Thu/Fri 8:30am–2pm, and Wed, 10am–2pm—the clinician will assess your symptoms and advise accordingly
  • If required, you will be booked into an urgent same day appointment—appointments are from 9:30am–1:30pm
  • If more appropriate an urgent appointment with your own clinic doctor or nurse (or another doctor in your team) can be arranged
  • Please note you must call before you come, this is not a walk in service
  • Please do not leave a message on the triage line—if you are unable to speak with the nurse, please call back again, as the clinician may be with another patient
  • Outside of these hours you must contact your GP, 111 or attend Accident and Emergency

      • 6 treatment chairs
      • Negative pressure facilities to isolate patients attending with a cough or who require investigations or treatment warranting negative pressure facilities
      • Intrathecal chemotherapy treatment room

      • Exercise oxygen saturation tests
      • Lumbar punctures
      • Line insertions and line management
      • Blood/blood product transfusions
      • IV therapies
      • Educating patients to self-administer injectable treatments

      Important information about new treatments for COVID-19

      The NHS is using new treatments for coronavirus. You might be suitable for these treatments if a PCR test confirms that you have coronavirus. These treatments need to be given quickly after you start to feel unwell. They can help to stop you from getting seriously ill from coronavirus.
