We want to make the best use of digital technology to deliver great patient care. That’s why we have introduced a new electronic patient record system called CernerEPR across the Trust.

When is this happening?

We started using the new system at West Middlesex University Hospital on 4 May 2018. Chelsea and Westminster Hospital went live between 1 and 5 November 2019.

How will patients be affected by this change?

Our priority is always patient safety and care, and we are working hard to keep any disruption to a minimum. As with anything new, it will take staff some time to get used to the new system. Patients and visitors on our wards may find there are more staff and more computers on the ward. In busy areas like outpatients, you may find that we take a little longer to help you than normal.

We would like to thank all our patients and their families for your patience while we improve the way we manage healthcare information.

What are the benefits of the new electronic patient record system?

Patients can be confident that staff caring for them have access to information about their health and care from wherever they are in our hospitals. This includes information like test results, diagnoses and treatments. This is better for patients and better for our clinical staff.

It will be the first time that our Trust has been on the same electronic patient record system across both our sites. And we are taking this one step further by sharing the system with Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust. If you are also a patient at, for example, Charing Cross Hospital, our staff will be able to see records of your care there. It all means a more complete picture of your health which will help us give you the best possible care.

What does it mean for staff?

One of the biggest benefits is having more information about their patients in one place. Less time spent looking for information means more time for patient care. And more information means faster decisions about appropriate treatment.

A change like this requires a real collaborative effort from staff across the Trust. Staff have been working hard to prepare and the Trust is committed to providing all the support that staff need as they get used to providing care using our new electronic patient record system.

Who can see my records?

Only staff who are involved in your direct care will access your records. This includes staff from our Trust and staff from neighbouring Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust which includes Charing Cross, Hammersmith and St Mary’s hospitals.

Who else processes my records?

Our patient record system is supplied by a company called Cerner. They provide data processing services to us so that information is made available to staff when it is needed. We have a data processing agreement with Cerner that defines exactly what they can do to provide this service to us. They are not permitted to use the information we give them for any other purpose. This arrangement allows our patients and staff to benefit from the expertise that a specialist supplier of healthcare technology can offer, while at the same time protecting the privacy of our patients.
